I don't know what I'm doing. But, that's OK

"I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it."
-- Pablo Picasso

Phew, that's a relief, because I always feel I don't really know what I am doing, but am kind of making it up as I go along.

It seems to me a key part of leadership today is helping people feel less uncomfortable about not knowing what they are doing.

Use Mind Mapping for Collaborative Leadership

Submitted by Gadget_Leader on October 7, 2009 - 7:10am.

I've been working with a leader who uses collaborative mind mapping to work with his leadership team on embedding their balanced scorecard. Leaders are told to 'communicate, communicate, communicate' and to take feedback and incorporate the thoughts of others while staying true to the direction and strategy. This struck me as a brilliant use of a new thought/communications tool to visualise issues and the direction you are going in and how to get there, then let people into what's in your head visually and add their own thoughts.

Tom Peters defines leadership (video clip)

He's a lot better than this live. It's actually rather excruciating watching him chopping the air like this - but highly entertaining. And he gets to the point eventually. All part of the charm of the world's greatest business guru (the 'ur guru' or the 'uber guru' according to Fortune and The Economist - the guru of gurus, in other words).

The Wall Street Journal has a good collection of video clips and 'reads' it calls Lessons in Leadership. Clips include Microsoft's Steve Ballmer on time management and decision-making, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg on how to spark creativity - CEOs and COOs giving their own personal tips on how to lead and manage, in other words. Here's the link:
