Five things that inspiring leaders do

According to Nigel Crouch, who led research for the UK government into 'what makes an inspiring leader', they behave in these five ways:

What makes an inspiring leader?

     1 They listen
     2 They involve
     3 They trust
     4 They appreciate
     5 They have fun

The research work Nigel was involved in has been used to make an online assessment tool that uses forced pairings - pushing you to choose between two descriptions of yourself. Once you have been through about twenty 'forced pairings' it spits out an asessment of you as a leader relative to what the researchers feel are essential requirements in an inspired leader. I don't like forced pairings myself. But, it's an interesting exercise and takes five minutes or so. You can find it here if you want to try it:

Have to agree with you

Have to agree with you though, the forced pairings were a bit of a pain. Question is though, hubbers, how would you be asking the questions to measure yourself or others like you against these criteria?

And here are my scores. Look like I need to work on 'creating the future', 'self-belief', 'single mindedness' and 'knowing what works', and some other things. Though Marcus Buckingham would probably tell me to forget all that and focus on my strengths ;0)

Go Go Gadgets for Leaders

Inspector Gadget

lets build a team then

If we were to look at building a team with strength in all the areas, then, I guess that between you and I we have these nailed (assuming a definition of nailed as anything above 95).

"People hardly ever make use of the freedom the have. For example, the freedom of thought. Instead they demand freedom of speech as a compensation."
Soren Kierkegaard

Two things

1) A leader listens. Everyone has a unique and personal view of the reality they inhabit. It isn't actually possible to describe your reality to someone else so that they fully understand it. Only by listening is it possible to start to gain some of the perception and empathy required to lead.

2) A leader's job is not to define the reality of others, but to exhibit with conviction and resolution a set of values which achieves consistency in anyone's reality. The stronger (more effective) the leader, the more the strength of their personal values transcends the unique and different realities that we all hold.

Others choose to follow when they are ready.
