The illustrator who didn't believe

Submitted by Walts Frozen Head on April 22, 2007 - 10:38am.

Mickey & WaltA sculptor who worked in Disneyland once explained how he used to be a humble illustrator, one of hundreds working for Disney, when Walt approached him and told him he could be a sculptor.

The illustrator replied he was happy where he was thanks - in his comfort zone - and could never develop the skills to be a sculptor. It was too far beyond him. Walt smiled and continued to work on him. Eventually, the illustrator was convinced by Walt's belief and went to work in Disneyland, where he became one of the park's leading sculptors.

There are hundreds of stories about Disney's personal belief in people and how his belief convinced them, made them believe in themselves, too, and freed them to remove self-imposed limitations and achieve far more than they had thought they were capable of. This group on Disney Leadership aims to share tales of Walt's leadership acts and see what we can learn from him.

If you don't understand that you work for your mislabeled 'subordinates,' then you know nothing of leadership. You know only tyranny.
