Three Big Assumptions Leaders Should Question

Submitted by Kate on April 25, 2009 - 7:23am.

Time to TAKE Time

In re-reading the Harvard article that I posted today it does make you question the downside and the impact of rushing everything. Quick wins are important but I do question the merit of new people *in particular leaders) coming into an organisation and being pressured to 'change the world' in 90 - 100 days. Perhaps it is time to take time....to build for a sustainable future.... Kate

The Hare Wins

Kate, Apparently we have not yet learned the lesson from the Tortoise and the Hare. There is a simple reason for that. In this world of ours, for the most part, the hare wins. We reward the hare with accolades, promotions, power, and riches. Even when the Hare loses, it wins (e.g. a CEO runs a company into the ground, gets fired, and exits with $50 million. Tough loss!). I just did a recent blog post referencing a Pontius’ Puddle cartoon in which Pontius states, “Sometimes I’d like to ask God why he allows poverty, famine, and injustice when he could be doing something about it.” His friend asks, “What’s stopping you?” Pontius responds, “I’m afraid God might ask me the same question.” It’s easy to blame the big wigs, but all of us are guilty. We allow it to happen. Until we start changing our reward systems, focus on building for the future, and on doing what’s right (and punishing the reverse), the trend will continue. While we may not be able to impact CEO compensation in the short term, for instance, we do have a large say in what gets rewarded within our areas of responsibility. We need to start making the tough decisions instead of going along with the tide. Nick

When to be the Hare and when to be the Tortoise

That is the question isn't...I stopped playing the 90-100 day game some time back. You are right Nick it is up to us to have the courage to run our own race and to support others in running theirs - as long as we are all heading the same (and right direction). We also have a way to go to help to change the attitude of some of our HR colleagues who are often the drivers of some of these processes. Kate

If an egg is broken by an outside force..a life ends. If an egg breaks from within...... .life begins. Great things always begin from within…

World's Top 30 Leadership GurusThanks for your vote...
If you voted in the World Leadership Gurus Top 30, the Hub's founder, Phil Dourado, came 14th this year (2012), up three places from 17th last year. The organisers say it is "because of the originality and impact of your work" that Phil was put in the Top 30 in the first place. And that means this Hub and the award-winning corporate versions we run for large companies. For more on how a private corporate version of The Hub works, email: phildourado@theleadershiphub.com
