What do say when people ask, "Why does leadershp matter?"

Submitted by DavidHasenbalg on May 5, 2009 - 6:03pm.

I was participating in an online discussion about leadership on another site, when someone chimed-in and said “Leadership is overrated and fluff.” After my initial outrage subsided, it got me thinking. There are many people I’ve encountered throughout my career who have thought essentially the same thing. While they may not have been as blunt as this, it seems that it is true.

2. Everything you do walks the talk
3. EveryONE walks the talk
4. Customers are best heard through many ears
5. The competition is anyone the customer compares you with
6. Reward, Recognize and Celebrate
7. Everyone makes a difference or ‘Xvxryonx makxs a diffxrxncx’ (just one defective typewriter key makes a massive difference)

From: Inside the Magic Kingdom, by Tom Connellan.  there are a lot of books on Disney, but I'd recommend this one.

It isn't a thing

Submitted by Theleadershipcoach on February 26, 2009 - 12:52am.

As a leadership coach, time and time again, for over 5 years, and probably with 4-500 companies, I come across individuals and organisations constantly chasing (often directly) something that does not exist. Namely 'Leadership'.

Leadership cannot be found, grasped, tasted, smelt or acquired . We will never find it in the fridge one day or fall over a hunk of it in the ceo's office.

It is a nominalisation, a verb pretending to be a noun (I think as scientists, we also chased 'heat' as a thing for around 200 years).
