Defining leadership

I am currently studying leadership, so am thinking a lot about what it actually is.  In my view leadership is enormously broad and at times confusing.

Without doubt, great leaders like Churchill, King, Gandhi and JFK stand out as examples we can relate to.  Could Rosa Parks, Brittany Spears, Apple Computers also fall into a leadership definition?

The concept of leaders needing to have followers is also interesting.  I presume the followers should be voluntary, although history gives us many examples where this is not the case.
