10 Tips for Managing Appraisals

Some tips in handling appraisals:

  1. Have all necessary data available
  2. Put the other person at ease
  3. Control pace and direction of the interview
  4. Listen… listen… listen
  5. Avoid destructive criticism (encourage self-criticism)
  6. Review performance systematically
  7. Discuss future action
  8. Discuss potential/aspirations
  9. Identify training/development required
  10. Avoid common pitfalls, such as:
    • dominating the conversation
    • making promises unlikely to be kept
    • expecting dramatic changes overnight
    • blaming those not present.
