Professor John Kotter - he of the famous 8 Stage framework for leading big change - has a new book out. I love John Kotter. I'm not so keen on the way his style has shifted with this and his last book (Our Iceberg is Melting) to using fables and cartoon-y characters the way Ken Blanchard does. But, that's just my personal preference. You can see what he's trying to do - break 'change' out of a dry academic box and make it more accessible. So, all power to him. This new book is on how to protect new ideas from being buried before they have a chance to fly - from being shot down by critics who are happy with the status quo and don't like innovation. Prof Kotter in this clip outlines one of the reasons people give to shoot down an idea, and offers a riposte so you can prepare in advance to push back this kind of criticism. In the book he and his co-author go through the most common attacks on new ideas and outline how to deal with each one. The book is called 'Buy-In: How to save good ideas from getting shot down'.
